Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,
On this 27th Sunday of Ordinary Time, our Scripture readings invite us to reflect on the sacred and unbreakable bond of marriage. These readings remind us of God’s intention for marriage—a covenant of love, fidelity, and permanence. In a world that often misunderstands or undermines the sanctity of this commitment, we are challenged to embrace the beauty and responsibilities of marriage.
In our first reading from Genesis, God created man and woman to be partners, united as one. This union reflects God’s own love and faithfulness. In today’s Gospel, Jesus emphasizes the divine origin and indissolubility of marriage. This teaching may seem challenging in our modern world where cohabitation is common, and divorce is on the rise, but Jesus points us toward the sacredness of family and the fulfillment that lifelong commitment can bring.
Marriage is a beautiful blessing, but it is also demanding. It requires patience, forgiveness, and above all, a commitment grounded in God’s love. As Pope St. John Paul II said, “Family, become what you are!” This calls families to grow in love through mutual understanding, prayer, and the sacraments.
We must also recognize the growing challenge of cohabitation. Statistics show that cohabiting couples face higher rates of depression, conflict, and instability compared to married couples. It is important for us as a community to guide our young people toward the true value of committed, sacramental marriage. This choice lays a stronger foundation for love, family, and personal happiness.
To those experiencing the pain of separation or divorce, please know that God’s love never abandons you. The Church is not here to judge but to support you in your struggles. Our parish community is called to extend compassion, respect, and sensitivity. No one is excluded from God’s grace, and we must ensure that all feel welcome, loved, and valued in our midst.
I also want to commend the young people in our community who choose to live chastely. This is a courageous choice in today’s world, and your commitment is a witness to the values of love and respect that underpin strong and meaningful relationships. You inspire us, and your example speaks to the true joy found in living according to God’s will.
On a personal note, I am blessed to be the fruit of my parents’ 65-year marriage. Their journey was not always easy—there were challenges and sacrifices—but their faithfulness and love for God brought deep joy and fulfillment. Their steadfast love has inspired me throughout my life and continues to do so.
I am also filled with joy as I prepare to celebrate my youngest brother Tony Pham’s wedding next week, as well as Father Hung Tran’s youngest brother’s wedding next month here. Seeing young couples embark on this sacred journey fills me with hope. And when I see families gathered here in church, whether celebrating joy or seeking comfort, I feel immense pride and gratitude. Your presence as families is a testament to the power of love and the fidelity of Christ.
Let us continue to pray for all married couples, that they may be strengthened in their commitment, and let us support those who are struggling, assuring them they are not alone. May God bless our families and fill our homes with His love, peace, and grace.
In Christ’s love,
Msgr. Cuong M. Pham
