Dear brothers and sisters,

As we gather this weekend to celebrate Father’s Day, we are also graced with the profound mystery of the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity. It is a beautiful coincidence of calendar and grace—one that invites us to reflect on fatherhood not merely as a human vocation but as a divine echo, a reflection of God’s very nature.

A young boy once quipped, “Father’s Day is just like Mother’s Day, except you don’t spend as much on the present.” While there may be some humor in his words, we know that the significance of Father’s Day reaches far beyond sentimentality. It is an opportunity to honor not only our biological fathers but also all those who have embraced the role of fatherhood—stepfathers, grandfathers, godfathers, spiritual fathers, mentors, and other father figures who have nurtured, guided, and loved us in countless ways.

In today’s first reading from Proverbs, we hear of God’s Wisdom, present before creation, “delighting in the children of men” (cf. Proverbs 8:22-31). This poetic vision reveals a Father who rejoices in His creation, who is intimately involved in the lives of His children. It reminds us that true fatherhood begins in the heart of God and is expressed through joy, attentiveness, and care.

In his Letter to the Romans, Saint Paul reminds us that “the love of God has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit” (cf. Romans 5:1-5). This divine love—patient, enduring, and full of hope—is the essence of authentic fatherhood. Whether we have known a loving father’s embrace or carry wounds from absence or loss, the Holy Trinity assures us that we are not alone. We have a heavenly Father who claims us as His own and walks with us through every trial.

In the Gospel of John, Jesus promises the coming of the Holy Spirit, who will guide us into all truth and declare what belongs to the Father and the Son (cf. John 16:12-15). This moment reveals not only the mystery of the Trinity but also a model of fatherhood: generous, self-giving, and life-sharing. The Father entrusts everything to the Son, the Son offers it to the Spirit, and the Spirit returns us to the Father. Such divine communion shows us that fatherhood is ultimately about relationship and love.

Personally, Father’s Day is bittersweet for me. I lost my father four years ago. Though his physical absence is deeply felt, his faith, his words, and his quiet strength continue to guide me. Beyond him, I have been blessed with many spiritual fathers—both priests and laymen—who have shaped me through their love and example. They remind me that fatherhood is not limited to biology but defined by sacrifice, presence, and fidelity.

As a priest, I have no children of my own, but I am blessed with many spiritual children—you among them—who call me “Father.” It is both a humbling title and a sacred trust. Each day, I strive to live out that vocation with love, care, and spiritual responsibility.

To those who have known the steady presence of a loving father—give thanks. To those who grieve a father’s loss or struggle with pain—take comfort in the embrace of our heavenly Father, who never abandons us. And to all the men who have answered the call to be fathers in any form—thank you. In a world in need of strong, compassionate, faithful men, your witness is invaluable.

Let us honor our fathers not only with gifts or kind words, but by living out the love we have received—faithfully, humbly, and generously. Let us draw strength from the eternal Father, the Son who walks with us, and the Spirit who dwells within us.

Wishing you a grace-filled and joyful Father’s Day,

Msgr. Cuong M. Pham
