Dear Parish Family,
As we enter the Second Week of Advent, our hearts are filled with anticipation and joy, especially as we approach the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe. This cherished celebration is a time to reflect on the rich tapestry of faith and culture that unites us as a parish and as part of the universal Church. Known lovingly as “La Morenita,” Our Lady of Guadalupe is more than just a symbol of devotion; she is the Patroness of the Americas and a constant reminder of Mary’s motherly care for all of us.
The story of Our Lady’s appearances to St. Juan Diego in 1531 is one of deep faith and divine grace. Her miraculous image on his tilma speaks volumes about God’s love and presence. Depicted as a mestiza, Our Lady reveals a harmonious blending of cultures, showing us that unity is not just possible—it is a gift from God. Her radiant image, with celestial symbols and the child Jesus in her womb, reminds us that she brings Christ into the world and into our hearts. She is a beacon of hope and a call to trust in God’s promise of salvation.
For us today, as for the oppressed Aztec people of her time, Our Lady of Guadalupe is a sign of God’s closeness, especially to those who feel forgotten or burdened. She teaches us that God’s love transcends all barriers and that His Church is called to embrace every culture, every background, and every person with the same spirit of openness and compassion.
It’s no accident that her feast falls during Advent, a season of joyful preparation. Just as John the Baptist pointed the way to Jesus, so too does Our Lady of Guadalupe invite us to make room for her Son in our hearts and lives. Her message is one of hope, renewal, and the promise of Christ’s constant presence. She encourages us to prepare not only for Christmas but for the daily renewal of our faith.
In our parish, devotion to Our Lady of Guadalupe is a cherished tradition. Each year, our Hispanic community lovingly prepares a Novena of Prayers and Devotions to honor her. This Thursday evening, December 12, we will gather to celebrate a Solemn Mass in her honor, followed by a festive gathering in the parish hall. Everyone is warmly invited to participate in this beautiful celebration of faith and culture. Let this be an opportunity for all of us to deepen our Advent journey and experience the richness of this holy season.
As we light the second candle of the Advent wreath, may the hope and love of Our Lady of Guadalupe inspire us. Let her message remind us to open our hearts wide for Christ’s coming and to carry His light into a world that desperately needs it.
