We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the 106 parishioners who have generously contributed to the Annual Catholic Appeal, raising so far a total of $36,706, with $29,722 already collected. If you haven’t donated yet, please prayerfully consider taking home an envelope at the church doors to support this important cause.

Registration is open for Religious Education classes starting in September. It is essential for all children to enroll in the program to receive the Sacraments. Please pick up an application or re-registration form from the parish office.

Join our parish Rosary Society at the church doors to purchase raffle tickets for enticing cash prizes and exclusive seats at their highly anticipated Fundraiser Luncheon, priced at $40 per person. Today, we welcome representatives of the Good Shepherds of Bethlehem to our church. They bring with them exquisite olive wood carvings, meticulously crafted by Catholic families in the Holy Land. By purchasing one of these unique gifts, you will extend a compassionate hand to our brothers and sisters in Bethlehem.

This Thursday, June 8th, the eight parishes of Astoria invite you to a Eucharistic Revival Celebration, held at Most Precious Blood Church on 36th Street. This special event will begin with Confessions at 6PM, followed by a Solemn Mass and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament by Bishop Robert Brennan at 7PM, with fellowship after the Mass. All are encouraged to attend this event in anticipation of the Feast of the Body and Blood of Christ.

Next weekend, our second collection at Mass will be for the support of Parish School Children. Your generosity will empower our Catholic Academies and Parish Schools!

Este evento especial comenzará con confesiones a las 6:00PM, seguido de una misa solemne y adoración del Santísimo Sacramento por el obispo Robert Brennan a las 7:00PM, con compañerismo después de la Santa Misa. Se anima a todos asistir a este evento antes de la Fiesta del Cuerpo y Sangre de Cristo.

El próximo fin de semana, nuestra segunda colecta en la Santa Misa será para el apoyo de los Niños de la Escuelas Parroquiales. ¡Su generosidad empoderará a nuestras Academias Católicas y Escuelas Parroquiales!

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

Each June, the Church celebrates the Month of the Sacred Heart, honoring Jesus’ Heart through liturgy, prayers, devotions, and acts of consecration. The Sacred Heart draws us into God’s infinite love and urges us to manifest that love in our world. In today’s challenging times, marked by the ongoing effects of the pandemic, violence, individualism, and threats to our faith, such devotion becomes even more crucial. The Sacred Heart symbolizes steadfast, faithful, and life-giving love—a love that transcends fleeting emotions and sentimentality.

The symbolism surrounding the Sacred Heart is profound and meaningful. The flames that envelop the Heart symbolize the glorious brilliance of Jesus’ love, illuminating a world obscured by darkness and sin, and awaiting ignition through the fire of the Holy Spirit. Moreover, the crown of thorns encircling the bleeding and wounded Heart serves as a poignant reminder of Jesus’ Heart pierced on the Cross (John 19:34). It also recalls the encounter between doubting Thomas and the Risen Lord who invited him to touch His wounds (John 20:24-29). Furthermore, it evokes the triumphant image of the slain yet victorious Lamb of God (Revelation 5:6). These vivid depictions reinforce the notion that Jesus’ love is not merely an abstract concept, but a genuine and unwavering commitment, even in the face of suffering. They remind us, as baptized followers of Christ, of our mission to bring this extraordinary love into the world.

Devotion to the Sacred Heart became popularized when Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque (1647-1690), a Visitation nun, had a personal revelation between 1673 and 1675 involving a series of mystical visions of Christ as she prayed before the Blessed Sacrament. During her visions, the Lord revealed to her the mysteries of His Sacred Heart. Given our parish’s close association with St. Margaret Mary, it is fitting that we wholeheartedly foster this devotion. I earnestly recommend that you follow St. Margaret Mary’s example by dedicating time to silent adoration before the Eucharist, meditating on the Word of God, attending Holy Mass whenever possible, and displaying an image of the Sacred Heart in your home. Consider joining us for the solemn Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament held on the first Friday of every month, both in the morning and evening.

I am happy to announce that a Solemn Mass in Honor of the Sacred Heart will take place on Friday, June 16 at our church in the evening, followed by festivity in the parish hall. We are honored to welcome back His Excellency Paul R. Sanchez, a cherished former pastor, who will preside over this special occasion. I am also grateful that the Confraternity of the Sacred Heart, a devout and dedicated group within our Hispanic community, will sponsor this special event. Stay tuned for further details in the days ahead.

Pope Francis urged all Catholics to look to the Sacred Heart as a source of love and to bring it to the whole world: “Today we begin the month dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, source of love and peace. Open yourselves to this love and take it ‘to the ends of the earth,’ witnessing to the goodness and mercy that flow from the Heart of Jesus” (General Audience, June 1, 2022). Let us stay close to the Heart of Jesus and be transformed into devoted Christians, ignited with passion to make known His mercy to the vulnerable, the isolated, the sick, the suffering, those who are marginalized or rejected.

Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo,

Cada junio, la Iglesia celebra el Mes del Sagrado Corazón, honrando el Corazón de Jesús a través de la liturgia, oraciones, devociones y actos de consagración. El Sagrado Corazón nos atrae hacia el infinito amor de Dios y nos insta a manifestar ese amor en nuestro mundo. En estos tiempos desafiantes, marcados por los efectos continuos de la pandemia, la violencia, el individualismo y las amenazas a nuestra fe, esta devoción se vuelve aún más crucial. El Sagrado Corazón simboliza un amor constante, fiel y vital, un amor que trasciende las emociones pasajeras y la sentimentalidad.

El simbolismo que rodea al Sagrado Corazón es profundo y significativo. Las llamas que envuelven el Corazón simbolizan el glorioso resplandor del amor de Jesús, iluminando un mundo oscurecido por la oscuridad y el pecado, esperando ser encendido por el fuego del Espíritu Santo. Además, la corona de espinas que rodea al Corazón herido y sangrante es un recordatorio conmovedor del Corazón de Jesús traspasado en la Cruz (Juan 19:34). También evoca el encuentro entre el incrédulo Tomás y el Señor Resucitado, quien lo invitó a tocar Sus heridas (Juan 20:24-29). Además, evoca la imagen triunfante del Cordero de Dios inmolado pero victorioso (Apocalipsis 5:6). Estas representaciones vívidas refuerzan la noción de que el amor de Jesús no es solo un concepto abstracto, sino un compromiso genuino e inquebrantable, incluso ante el sufrimiento. Nos recuerdan, como seguidores bautizados de Cristo, nuestra misión de llevar este amor extraordinario al mundo.

La devoción al Sagrado Corazón se popularizó cuando Santa Margarita María Alacoque (1647-1690), una monja de la Visitación, tuvo una revelación personal entre 1673 y 1675 que involucraba una serie de visiones místicas de Cristo mientras oraba ante el Santísimo Sacramento. Durante sus visiones, el Señor le reveló los misterios de Su Sagrado Corazón. Dada la estrecha asociación de nuestra parroquia con Santa Margarita María, es apropiado que fomentemos esta devoción de todo corazón. Recomiendo sinceramente que sigan el ejemplo de Santa Margarita María dedicando tiempo a la adoración silenciosa ante el Santísimo Sacramento, meditando en la Palabra de Dios, asistiendo a la Santa Misa siempre que sea posible y exhibiendo una imagen del Sagrado Corazón en sus hogares. Consideren unirse a nosotros en la solemne Adoración del Santísimo Sacramento que se lleva a cabo el primer viernes de cada mes, tanto por la mañana como por la noche.

Me complace anunciar que se llevará a cabo una Solemne Misa en Honor al Sagrado Corazón el viernes 16 de junio en nuestra iglesia por la tarde, seguida de una festividad en el salón parroquial. Nos honra dar la bienvenida a Su Excelencia Paul R. Sánchez, un querido ex-párroco, quien presidirá esta ocasión especial. También agradezco a la Hermandad del Sagrado Corazón, un grupo devoto y dedicado dentro de nuestra comunidad hispana, por patrocinar este evento especial. Estén atentos para más detalles en los próximos días.

El Papa Francisco instó a todos los Católicos a dirigirse al Sagrado Corazón como fuente de amor y llevarlo al mundo entero: “Hoy comenzamos el mes dedicado al Sagrado Corazón de Jesús, fuente de amor y paz. Ábranse a este amor y llévenlo hasta los confines de la tierra, testimoniando la bondad y misericordia que fluyen del Corazón de Jesús” (Audiencia General, 1 de junio de 2022). Mantengámonos cerca del Corazón de Jesús y transformémonos en Cristianos devotos, encendidos con pasión para dar a conocer Su misericordia a los vulnerables, los aislados, los enfermos, los que sufren y aquellos que están marginados o rechazados.

If you have not made a gift, we invite you to prayerfully consider this cause by taking home an envelope at the church doors.

Registration is open for Religious Education classes, commencing in September. It is essential for all children to be enrolled in the program to receive the Sacraments. We invite parents to kindly pick up either a new application or a re-registration form from the parish office.

If you are an adult 18 years or older who has not yet received the Sacraments of Baptism, Communion, or Confirmation, we extend a warm invitation to you to sign up for a mini-course, that will help you to prepare yourself for these significant spiritual gifts.

Sunday, at 3PM, our Vietnamese community will hold a Solemn Flower Ceremony to honor the Blessed Mother in the church. The event will feature live performances of liturgical dances, accompanied by Marian hymns and artistic choreography, followed by a Solemn Mass. All are invited to attend in person or tune in to our YouTube channel to experience this unique cultural expression of Marian devotion.

In observance of Memorial Day, this Monday, May 29th, there will be a single Mass held in the Main Church at 9 AM. After the Rosary following Mass, both the church and the office will be closed for the day.

This Friday, June 2nd, is the First Friday of June, the month dedicated to Sacred Heart of Jesus. There will be Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament after the 8AM Mass for silent adoration until the 12PM Noon Mass. That same evening, there will be a Holy Hour of Adoration with Consecration to the Sacred Heart at 6:30PM, followed by a Holy Mass at 7:30PM, both in Spanish.

Next weekend, representatives from the Good Shepherds of Bethlehem will be present at our church, offering olive wood carvings created by Catholic families in the Holy Land. By purchasing a gift, you can support our brothers and sisters in Bethlehem.

Sus compromisos ascienden a un total de $36.361, de los cuales ya se han recaudado $29.322. Si aún no ha hecho una donación, le invitamos a considerar esta causa en oración llevando a casa un sobre que encontrará en las puertas de la iglesia.

La inscripción está abierta para las clases de Educación Religiosa che comienzan en septiembre. Es esencial que todos los niños estén inscritos en el programa para poder recibir los Sacramentos. Invitamos a los padres a que pasen por la oficina parroquial para recoger una nueva solicitud o un formulario de reinscripción.

Si Usted es un adulto, de 18 años o más, que aún no ha recibido los Sacramentos del Bautismo, la Comunión o la Confirmación, extendemos una cordial invitación para que se inscriba en un curso breve en la oficina parroquial que lo ayudará a prepararse para estos significativos dones espirituales.

En conmemoración del Día de los Caídos este lunes, 29 de mayo, se llevará a cabo una Santa Misa en la Iglesia a las 9AM. Después del Rosario, tanto la iglesia como la oficina estarán cerradas por el día.

El domingo a las 3PM, la comunidad vietnamita de nuestra parroquia llevará a cabo una Ceremonia Solemne de Flores en honor a la Santísima Madre. El evento se llevará a cabo en la iglesia y contará con presentaciones en vivo de danzas litúrgicas, acompañadas de himnos marianos y coreografías artísticas, seguido de una Misa Solemne. Todos están cordialmente invitados a asistir personalmente o sintonizar nuestro canal de YouTube para seguir el evento.

Este viernes 2 de junio es el primer viernes de junio, el mes dedicado al Sagrado Corazón de Jesús. La Hermandad del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús les invita a una Hora Santa a las 6:30PM, seguida por la Santa Misa. Todos los que gusten consagrarse al Corazón de Jesús pueden comunicarse con Olga o Sergio Huerta para más información.

El próximo fin de semana, representantes de los Buenos Pastores de Belén estarán presentes en nuestra iglesia, ofreciendo tallas de madera de olivo creadas por familias católicas en la Tierra Santa. Al comprar un regalo, pueden apoyar a nuestros hermanos y hermanas en Belén.

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

With joyous hearts, we gather this weekend to celebrate the glorious occasion of Pentecost, marking the arrival of the Holy Spirit upon the united Apostles. In the Acts of the Apostles, St. Luke vividly depicts this transformative experience as a powerful wind filling the upper room, accompanied by tongues of fire resting upon each disciple. Moreover, he reveals that as the Apostles fearlessly proclaimed the Good News, people from diverse nations marveled at their ability to understand the message in their own native tongues.

Pentecost, therefore, encompasses not only the outpouring of the Holy Spirit but also the celebration of unity that this divine gift brings. The Spirit unites people from diverse backgrounds, languages, and cultures, connecting them with those who bear witness to the resurrected Christ. Through this unity, we are all able to encounter the boundless power of God, transcending the sorrowful divisions that separate us. The Holy Spirit does not impose rigid conformity that stifles diversity; rather, like a sacred dew, it shines upon the varied plants and flowers of the Garden of Creation, preserving their unique beauty and God-given individuality.

This profound understanding of Pentecost urges and inspires us to collaborate in constructing an inclusive society that cherishes diversity as a splendid gift from the Spirit of the Creator. As members of the Catholic Church, a faith community deeply rooted in tradition yet embracing a multitude of cultures and languages, we possess a golden opportunity to bear witness to love—a universal language understood by all. Unfortunately, in our pluralistic society, we witness the destructive consequences of pride, prejudice, and hatred, leading to exclusion, alienation, and even senseless violence. In the face of these tragedies, the Christian response is love. Love rebuilds the human family, restores the initial unity and peace that God intended us to enjoy, and constructs bridges that enable us to surmount the chasms of racism, xenophobia, and all forms of prejudice and fear.

For the past 182 years, Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Astoria has stood as a spiritual haven for countless immigrants, refugees, and foreign families. Together, they have nurtured this faith community, leaving us a treasured Catholic legacy that continues to bless our current generation. Though the journey of worshiping and traversing life’s paths as diverse individuals may present challenges, we are grateful to the Holy Spirit for gracing us with the common language of love, which serves as an enduring emblem of unity within our parish family. Today, it is our sacred mission to bear witness to this precious gift.

“Veni Creator Spiritus!” With fervent prayers, the Church resounds, “Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of Your faithful and kindle in them the fire of Your love. Send forth Your Spirit, and they shall be created, and You shall renew the face of the earth!” Let us pray that our hearts may be set ablaze with an all-embracing love for all, including those among us who speak different tongues.

Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo,

Con corazones gozosos, nos reunimos este fin de semana para celebrar la gloriosa ocasión de Pentecostés, que marca la llegada del Espíritu Santo sobre los Apóstoles reunidos en unidad. En los Hechos de los Apóstoles, San Lucas describe vívidamente esta experiencia transformadora como un viento poderoso que llena la sala donde se encontraban los discípulos, acompañado de lenguas de fuego posándose sobre cada uno de ellos. Además, nos revela que, al proclamar valientemente la Buena Nueva, los Apóstoles sorprendieron a personas de diversas naciones al poder entender el mensaje en sus propias lenguas maternas.

Pentecostés, por lo tanto, abarca no solo la efusión del Espíritu Santo, sino también la celebración de la unidad que este don divino trae consigo. El Espíritu une a personas de diferentes orígenes, idiomas y culturas, conectándolos con aquellos que dan testimonio de Cristo resucitado. A través de esta unidad, todos podemos encontrarnos con el poder ilimitado de Dios, trascendiendo las tristes divisiones que nos separan. El Espíritu Santo no impone una conformidad rígida que sofoca la diversidad; más bien, como un rocío sagrado, ilumina las distintas plantas y flores del Jardín de la Creación, preservando su belleza única y la individualidad que Dios les ha dado.

Esta profunda comprensión de Pentecostés nos insta e inspira a colaborar en la construcción de una sociedad inclusiva que valora la diversidad como un espléndido don del Espíritu del Creador. Como miembros de la Iglesia Católica, una comunidad de fe arraigada en la tradición pero que abraza multitud de culturas e idiomas, tenemos una oportunidad invaluable para dar testimonio del amor, un lenguaje universal comprendido por todos. Desafortunadamente, en nuestra sociedad pluralista, presenciamos las consecuencias destructivas del orgullo, los prejuicios y el odio, que llevan a la exclusión, la alienación e incluso a la violencia sin sentido. Frente a estas tragedias, la respuesta cristiana es el amor. El amor reconstruye la familia humana, restaura la unidad y paz original que Dios pretendía que disfrutáramos, y construye puentes que nos permiten superar las brechas del racismo, la xenofobia y todas las formas de prejuicio y miedo.

Durante los últimos 182 años, nuestra parroquia de Nuestra Señora del Monte Carmelo en Astoria ha sido un refugio espiritual para innumerables familias de inmigrantes, refugiados y extranjeros. Juntos, han nutrido esta comunidad de fe, dejándonos un legado católico preciado que continúa bendiciendo a nuestra generación actual. Aunque el camino de adoración y travesía de la vida como individuos diversos puede presentar desafíos, agradecemos al Espíritu Santo por bendecirnos con el lenguaje común del amor, que sirve como un emblema perdurable de unidad en nuestra familia parroquial. Hoy, nuestra sagrada misión es dar testimonio de este don precioso.

“Veni Creator Spiritus”. Con fervientes oraciones, la Iglesia resuena: “Ven, Espíritu Santo, llena los corazones de tus fieles y enciende en ellos el fuego de tu amor. Envía tu Espíritu y serán creados, y renovarás la faz de la tierra.” Oremos para que nuestros corazones sean encendidos con un amor abarcador para todos, incluyendo aquellos entre nosotros que hablan diferentes idiomas.

Que las bendiciones de Pentecostés estén sobre cada uno de ustedes.

We would like to thank the 96 parishioners who have participated in the Annual Catholic Appeal so far. We are grateful to have you on board in this important endeavor. To date you have pledged a total of $34,470, of which $27,371 has been collected. Any donations above our parish’s goal of $67,815 will be returned directly to us for physical improvements that will benefit us and our future generations. Envelopes are still available at the church doors.

Registration is now open for Religious Education classes starting in September. For new registrations, please pick up an application at the parish office. If you have children that are already in the program this year, please ask for a re-registration form.

Next weekend, our second collection after Holy Communion will support the Catholic Communications Campaign which uses technology such as the internet, television and radio to engage and build Catholic Communities here in the US as well as developing countries.

Nos gustaría agradecer a los 96 feligreses que han participado en la Campaña Católica Anual hasta el momento. Estamos agradecidos de tenerlo con nuestra iglesia en este importante esfuerzo. Hasta la fecha ha prometido un total de $34,470, de los cuales se han recaudado $27,371. Cualquier donación por encima de la meta de nuestra parroquia de $67,815 será devuelta directamente a nosotros para mejoras físicas que nos beneficiarán a nosotros y a nuestras generaciones futuras.
