Festival of St. James the Apostle

A large number of our Spanish speaking community hails from near Puebla in Mexico, whose patron saints are St James the Apostle and Saint James of Alcala, “the two Santiagos.” For the first time, our Santiago Committee arranged a celebration on Saturday, July 26, 2014. OLMC Feast Day

As Mother Church of Queens and in celebration of our 173rd anniversary, we celebrated three masses throughout the day.  We concluded the day with an evening Mass in three languages (English, Spanish, Italian) to honor our Patroness, Our Lady of Mount Carmel on July 16, 2014. For our tri-lingual celebration, our main celebrant was Father Joe Pham who has been serving this parish for 32 years! He was assisted by Deacon Ruben Mendez along with lectors Rafael Gomez and Nina Carullo.
The feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel feast was instituted in the 14th century by the Carmelite Order to commemorate the anniversary of the day in 1251 when our Blessed Mother gave the brown scapular to Saint Simon Stock.  The Directory on Popular Piety and the Liturgy 205 states,  “The scapular is a sign of the relationship between the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother and Queen of Mount Carmel and those who entrust themselves to her protection, who have recourse to her maternal intercession, who are mindful of the importance of spiritual life and the need for prayer.”  The Preface for Our Lady of Mount Carmel, “The Blessed Virgin Mary watches unceasingly over the brethren of her Son, and lights us along our pilgrim way to the Mount of your Glory, our beacon of comfort, and the embodiment of all our hopes as members of the Church.”

ADULT CONFIRMATION - VIGIL MASS OF PENTECOST

On Saturday, June 7, 2014, the Feast of Pentecost, our Pastor, Msgr. Sean G. Ogle, V.F. was privileged to anoint 7 people with the Sacrament of Confirmation, shown in the picture below. Also in the picture - Pastor Emeritus of Saint Margaret Mary, Father Ed Brady and Deacon Christopher R. Heanue. Pentecost is the one time in addition to the Easter Vigil that the pastor is given the faculty to confer the Sacrament of Confirmation. These candidates have been studying and preparing for this day to receive this third sacrament of initiation. May the Holy Spirit purify and illuminate these candidates as well as our entire parish so that we may grow in the holiness of the Lord. Video of the event has been posted on You Tube.
