Our Lady of Mount Carmel is one of three parishes in the Diocese of Brooklyn to welcome the Pastoral Institute's Lay Ministry Program. We will be home to close to 50 people for three years of study until they are commissioned as lay leaders to serve a number of parishes in the Diocese. We are very happy to congratulate both our English and Spanish Groups who have completed the first of the three year program.
The mission statement of the Pastoral Institute:
Affirming the baptismal call of women and men to serve the Diocese of Brooklyn, the Pastoral Institute sponsors the Lay Ministry Program. An integrated process of education and formation prepares participants for their roles as pastoral leaders and ministers for the New Evangelization.

Mount Carmel parish rejoices in the naming of Brooklyn Diocese's two new auxiliary bishops yesterday by Pope Benedict XVI, both of whom have strong connections to our parish:
Monsignor Paul Sanchez, our pastor from 2001 to 2008, and currently Episcopal Vicar for Queens;
and Monsignor Raymond Chappetto, baptized, confirmed and graduated from here (class of 1959), currently pastor of Our Lady of the Snows in North Floral Park.
They are priests beloved of their people and highly respected by fellow priests. They will be ordained bishops on Wednesday, July 11 in Our Lady of Angels Church in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. We will invite each of them to come celebrate with us at Mount Carmel in the coming months. Please keep them and our diocese in your prayers in these challenging times.
